Flash floods struck Parun and other communities in Nuristan on July 20, destroying homes and shops and leaving families facing urgent uncertainty.
What we know
As of July 21, Afghan authorities reported at least 23 people killed, about 80 injured, and more than 100 missing. Search and rescue work is continuing, so these figures may change. Read the Associated Press report.
What Famidi is doing now
Famidi has activated its staff and is assessing local access, priority needs, and what assistance can be sourced and delivered responsibly. Depending on verified conditions, support may include food, safe water, shelter materials, transport, medical support, or other urgent relief.
We will publish dated updates as information and access are confirmed. Conditions can change quickly, so emergency-response funds will be used flexibly for the most urgent verified needs.

In a July 21 coordination update, the Afghan Red Crescent Society said first aid, medicines, hot meals, safe drinking water, food and non-food items, and other essential assistance were among the urgent needs being coordinated for flood-affected families. Famidi is using this external response picture alongside its local assessment; this does not mean Famidi has delivered these items yet. Read the ARCS update.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it delivered food items and family tents to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority for communities affected by the Nuristan floods. This is an external relief action; Famidi has not claimed delivery of these items and continues its own assessment and response planning.

Official health response update — July 22, 2026, 5:02 a.m. PDT
Emergency medicines delivered
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health reported that its Emergency Preparedness and Response team delivered 16 types of medicines to the Nuristan Provincial Public Health Directorate to support treatment for people injured in the recent floods. The ministry said its delegation will also assess health-service needs in the province. This is an official government relief action; Famidi has not delivered the reported medicines and remains in assessment and response planning.

Official health response update — July 22, 2026, 7:04 a.m. PDT
Ambulances and a health camp deployed
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health reported that it has sent ambulances and essential medical equipment to flood-affected areas of Nuristan. In coordination with an implementing partner and the Afghan Red Crescent Society, the ministry said it has established a health camp for injured people and others in need; the Kunar Provincial Public Health Directorate has also sent ambulances, health workers, and medical equipment. This is an official government and responder health action. Famidi has not delivered the reported services or equipment and remains in assessment and response planning.
