A shoe cleaner accepted a month of bread, then quietly gave the card to someone he believed needed it more.

When a Famidi volunteer offered a Naan Card to a man cleaning shoes on a Kabul street, he pointed toward another worker and said that someone else needed it more. The other person had already left, so the card was handed to the shoe cleaner.
The next day, the bakery record showed that he did not arrive for the daily bread. According to the May 18 follow-up, he had quietly passed the card to the person he had identified.
“Someone else needs this more than me.”
The moment matters because it shows agency. Receiving support did not erase his judgment about his community or turn him into a passive character in someone else’s campaign.
The bakery relationship also created a practical point of follow-up. A card is not only a handoff prop; it is tied to a place where the daily promise can be observed.
