Why do Afghanistan GDP growth estimates disagree?

Reviewed by Famidi editorial team
Direct answer

GDP estimates can differ because reports use different fiscal years, calendar years, data vintages, methods, and assumptions in a difficult measurement environment.

What the figure or term means

UNDP discussed 1.9 percent growth for FY2024/25, while the World Bank’s later Spring 2026 update estimated 4.8 percent for 2025.

The figures should not be averaged together.

How to use this information responsibly

Economic indicators describe different things: national output, prices, household deprivation, employment, public revenue, or access to services. Reading the definition and period is essential.

Economic series are revised and are not interchangeable. Growth in total GDP can coexist with falling income per person and worsening household hardship.
